This week we took a look at state license plates. As you may have noticed, we took a little bit more of a trendy and comical approach with this week’s videos and only highlighted some of the top and bottom state license plates. However, we have the full tier list of all 50 state license plates posted below and we’ll take a deeper look into some of the most notable license plates.

Shining Stars
There are several states that just blew us away with their license plate designs. Let’s take a look at some of them.
The Utah license plate is our #1 pick. The colors are eye-catching and the artwork is beautiful. The “life elevated” motto represents the state’s Arches National Park.

The New Mexico license plate is another lovely plate and holds the #2 spot on our ranking. The plate features the same cross as the state flag, but the plate has a base color of blue rather than yellow. This specific plate design is called “the Centennial Plate” and was first introduced in 2010 to honor New Mexico’s 100 years of statehood.

There is no doubt that Colorado has one of the most famous license plates. The current design was established in 1960 and has not been updated since. The mountain range that appears on the plate is not a real mountain range. It is simply artwork of a generic mountain range.

The Delaware license plate looks like something that belongs on the Polar Express. Although this plate has a simple design, the colors and level of shine make up for a lot. Delaware is the only state in which license plates can be privately manufactured for legal registration purposes.

Hawaii is often referred to as the rainbow state, so it is only fitting that a rainbow be on the license plate. The plate also features the word “Aloha” at the top. If you’re ever in Hawaii, the colors on the Hawaiian license plate can appear 40% darker due to the reflection of sunlight within the raindrops in Hawaii.

Plates Fall Flat
The state license plates can be split into 2 categories: plates with a design and plates with just a number. You’ll notice that the designs on the full 50 plate tier list get more complex as it goes up. States like Massachusetts, Virginia, Texas, and California just left us wanting more. Not to mention trying to spot these plates among the other state plates is extremely difficult considering there are no uniquely identifying features. The biggest let down of all the plates has to be California. For such a large and popular state, the level of creativity and design of this license plate is such a disappointment.
